Mendelssohn: Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor; Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor

These, surely, are the two greatest piano trios after Schubert: passionate, wonderfully inventive works with none of the textural overload you find in the trios of Schumann and Brahms. The Grieg Trio plays them with intensity and obvious affection, always allowing the music adequate breathing space. Perhaps the C minor Trio’s scherzo is a touch too fast for the music’s detail to be heard with sufficient clarity in this church acoustic; but these performances must be among the best available at any price.
