Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 3 in A minor (Scottish); Symphony No. 4 in A (Italian)

Masur moulds these performances persuasively, balancing the vivacious and poetic aspects of both scores. His orchestra clearly has the music in its blood, and in terms of warmth and line the strings are especially fine. Ultimately, however, it is the slow movements and the more lyrical aspects of the music which come off best, because the acoustic is so reverberant that details are frequently obscured in the lively or more fully scored passages.
