Milhaud/Honegger/Roussel

Hot on the heels of Bernstein’s recording of Milhaud’s Les choéphores comes this 1957 version from Markevitch and his Paris forces. It has the clear advantage of full texts and translations, but although the performance is dramatic, the recorded sound is somewhat thin and anaemic. This criticism can be levelled, moreover, at the other items also, which is a pity, since the Honegger is given a fine performance. The playing in the Roussel, however, is not in the top league.
