Monteverdi: Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda; Lamento della ninfa; Ogni amante è guerrier; Mentre vaga Angioletta

It would be hard to imagine a more vivid and persuasive account of Monteverdi’s dramatic cantata. Trudeliese Schmidt’s glorious mezzo makes her a stronger than usual Clorinda, and Werner Hollweg’s narrator is movingly drawn, while the Concentus Musicus Wien gives a performance that is by turns lyrical and exhilaratingly urgent. The other madrigals here may be senza gesto (without action), but they are no less well sung. Claire Wrathall
