Mozart: Flute Concerto in G, K313; Flute Concerto in D, K314; Clarinet Concerto in A, K622

Redolent of the music college/audition/competition circuit, Mozart’s flute concertos are not the easiest works to refresh. Notwithstanding an unevenly supported lower register, Zukerman gets through most of the notes, but her rushed allegros and breathless ornamentation lack composure, while her slow movements border tremulously on the sleepy; cadenzas are cautious. Marcellus, with Szell in predictably tight control, belongs to another class. Here is beautifully pure clarinet-playing, unaffected yet tensioned, embracing an adagio of autumnal sunset. Ates Orga
