Ivan Moravec’s playing, here part of VAI’s historical performance series, is something very special. The impression is of total humility to the composers’ wishes for atmosphere, emotion and personality; no note is played without sensitivity or integration, no moment interposes anything that is not 100 per cent genuine in its service to the music. The recorded sound is not wonderful, but the pure, distilled quality about Moravec’s musicality more than compensates. He seems to be one of those artists, modest, unflashy and genuine, who go under-appreciated for years, yet whose musicality will be far more enduring than that of many better-known names.
