Nielsen/Sibelius: Symphony No. 5; Luonnotar; Night-ride and Sunrise; The Oceanides

Kubelík’s live 1983 performance of the Nielsen offers well-characterised but untidy playing. An overall lack of tension robs one of the most dynamic of symphonic finales of a sense of climax. Dorati and the LSO recorded the Sibelius tone poems in upfront sound in 1969. The weight and timbre of Gwyneth Jones’s voice suit Luonnotar, though not her unsteadiness. Night-Ride and Sunrise gets out of synch in places, while the Oceanides fails to cohere. George Hall
