Patterson: Concerto for Orchestra; Missa brevis; Europhony

Patterson’s Concerto for Orchestra is (like Bartók’s) a showcase for orchestra and the LPO excels in the outer movements with virtuosic playing in all departments. The LPO Choir sounds like a gospel choir in the catchy Gloria of the attractive Missa brevis, an unaccompanied work which all good amateur choirs could perform. Europhony is no less entertaining with its contrasts, exciting rhythms and expertly crafted orchestration. This excellent disc is a highly deserved tribute to Patterson, fifty this year.
