Prokofiev: Violin Sonata No. 1 in F minor; Violin Sonata No. 2 in D; Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor

The sonatas here are poignant reminders of a younger, subtler Itzhak Perlman. He may shy away a little from the severe side of No. 1 – it’s left to Ashkenazy to find the heart of darkness in this, Prokofiev’s most ominous chamber work – but the Andante has an unearthly tenderness about it, which extends to the lighter-spirited D major Sonata. The Second Violin Concerto is an optional extra, a comparatively bland partnership with the sound on the dry side; the lines are shaped but sinister depths remain unstirred. David Nice
