Rachmaninov: Preludes (complete)

Peter Katin’s 1972 account of the complete Preludes (Op. 23 and Op. 32, which, with the famous C sharp minor Prelude, Op. 3/2, take us through all the major and minor keys) is now available on one disc. Katin communicates the individual character of each piece, and his great strength here is a sense of majesty and lyrical sensitivity, well captured on the analogue recording, though Ashkenazy’s bravura performances (on two full-price Decca discs with the Second Sonata) still provide a benchmark in this music.
