Rachmaninov, Liapunov, Balakirev & Glazunov

This two-disc set features a rewarding selection of Russian tone poems, from the familiar Isle of the Dead and Tamara to an offbeat series of couplings from the byways of Russian music. Given that the dates of these Melodiya recordings span some 24 years, the performances and sound quality show a remarkable consistency, with plenty of that now-rare ‘authentic’ Russian wind and brass sound and a commitment from all concerned that drives the colours and Romanticism of these works home.
