COMPOSERS: Rachmaninov/Scriabin
LABELS: DG Classikon
WORKS: Piano Concerto No. 3
PERFORMER: Tamás Vásáry (piano) LSO/Yuri Ahronovitch, New York Philharmonic/ Giuseppe Sinopoli
CATALOGUE NO: 439 487-2 ADD/DDD (1977/89)
‘Opposing Muscovite thought and philosophy’, 1908-9, is the provocative theme of this latest Classikon compilation. If you like your Rachmaninov Third uncut, elegant, on the lyrical, albeit emotionally reserved side, with the composer’s longer cadenza and (rarely played) alternative ending, then Vásáry’s version will not disappoint. It wears its years lightly. Sinopoli’s hothouse Scriabin remains luscious and indulgent yet formally cogent. Ates Orga
