Rameau/Campra

The two dance suites from Rameau’s Le temple de la gloire, an opera-ballet to a text by Voltaire, contain much charming music. Moreover, the present recording of them is a model of stylish and appropriate performance practice. Leppard’s use of the continuo to colour the texture is particular arresting: sample the Loure from the second suite (track 11). Campra’s L’Europe galante of 1697 is equally effective in this clear well-lit recording.Nicholas Rast
