The astonishing detail and credibly natural timbre of these transfers belie the fact that Pascal Rogé’s original Decca masters were made 20 years ago. This is a reissue of rare distinction; there are few more viscerally exciting recordings of Gaspard available. By contrast, Rogé brings flamboyance and a certain Gallic insouciance to the Valses nobles et sentimentales. This comprehensive two-disc survey of Ravel piano works also includes warmly characterised accounts of Ma mère l’oye and Le tombeau de Couperin.
