Rossini: Overtures

Serafin’s recordings with Rome Opera in the Sixties – Callas, Gedda et al – remain more than collectors’ pieces: they’re desert island material. So too these overtures. Every ‘i’ is dotted, each nuance captured by superlative soloists (cellos, trombones, cor anglais) and a band which was absolute master of its art. Rossini’s overtures are tone poems on a Berliozian scale – as this incisive William Tell can vouch. The transfers are notable. When the whole orchestra blasts, you know it. Roderic Dunnett
