Rubbra: Symphony No. 10 (Sinfonia da camera); A Tribute; Improvisations on Virginal Pieces by Giles Farnaby

Rubbra’s Tenth is an impressive work, which compresses its several sections into a compact single movement. It is beautifully played and recorded, as is the lovely Tribute, in honour of Vaughan Williams, and enthusiasts of this fine, if neglected, British composer needn’t hesitate. But the short playing time and lightweight filler in the Improvisations prevent a wholehearted recommendation. David Michaels
