Although somewhat underpowered, the Nash Ensemble’s account of the Trout Quintet does not lack wit or warmth: the players perform with great clarity, especially the pianist Ian Brown. The interesting filler is the late operatic scena The Shepherd on the Rock, to words mainly by Wilhelm Müller. Felicity Lott sings the bravura role with style and great sureness of tone, but most enjoyable is the exquisite clarinet obbligato (played by Michael Collins).William Humphreys-Jones
