Schubert: Octet in F, D803

The Berlin Soloists’ account of the Octet in this volume of Teldec’s ‘Franz Schubert Collection’ impressively underlines the score’s symphonic proportions. They achieve a pleasing balance between orchestral and chamber characters in the outer movements and phrase the Adagio beautifully. They also vividly evoke the dance charm of the scherzo and minuet and shade instrumental colours deftly in the variations, creating increased expressive breadth. Thus, the Soloists reflect Schubert’s own claims that, in works such as this, he was intending to pave his way to a grand symphony. Nicholas Rast
