Schubert: Winterreise

Sadly this performance of Schubert’s Winterreise, by Robert Tear and Philip Ledger fails to live up to expectations. The Biedermeier tone quality of the piano denies the cycle much of its dramatic weight and, although the more urgent songs are often effective, the squareness of the slower songs contributes to an overall lack of poetic coherence.
