Schubert/Schumann: Lieder

This disc presents Prey at his best, in a collection of well-known and lesser-known songs from the greatest of 19th-century Lieder composers, Schubert and Schumann. These 20 songs, mainly Goethe settings, were recorded in 1962 and 1965 when Prey was in his thirties, and they vividly demonstrate his remarkable dramatic range: Schubert’s ‘Im Abendrot’ is as creamy and tender as ‘Erlkönig’ is chilling. The only drawback is a worrying hint of over loading in the louder passages of the 1965 recordings. Annette Morreau
