Schumann: Symphony No. 1; Symphony No. 2; Symphony No. 3; Symphony No. 4

A praiseworthy and committed Schumann cycle from Kurt Masur, which received a largely indifferent reception when it appeared just a few years ago. These are expert, alert and, above all, caring performances; Masur addresses the familiar obstacles of Schumann’s unjustly maligned orchestration in microscopic detail, and the results are self-recommending. The LPO plays with surpassing bravura and eloquence, and recorded sound is generally superb. Worth hearing, particularly if you have yet to be convinced by Schumann symphonies. Michael Jameson
