Shostakovich: Symphony No. 12; Execution of Stepan Razin

This recording of one of Shostakovich’s most overtly propagandist works makes it possible to judge his Twelfth Symphony as music. The performance has considerable bite and emotional depth, and the breadth of the recording, serves Durjan and the Leipzig Gewandhaus well. Stepan Razin contains music reminiscent of Mussorgsky operas. Kegel and his team respond well to the rich orchestration, with Vogel an effective soloist. Nicholas Rast
