Shostakovich: Piano Concerto No. 1; Pano Concerto No. 2; Piano Trio No. 2

Exhilarating and committed playing from List makes this performance of the First Concerto a most enticing proposition. The Berlin Opera Orchestra provides sterling support, the only blot on the landscape being some dubious intonation from the muted trumpet at the end of the slow movement. Things are not quite so impressive in the Second Concerto, where ensemble between soloist and orchestra is somewhat speculative in places. But the disc is worth buying simply to hear an extraordinarily gripping account of the Trio which, despite claims to the contrary, sounds as if it was recorded in stereo.
