This anthology of 20th-century Mexican music has been chosen with great care. With works such a Revueltas’s boldly abrasive Sensemayá and Halffter’s opulent Obertura festiva, there is a risk of overdosing on brilliantly flamboyant orchestration. This has been avoided, however, by the inclusion of more subtly coloured pieces, such as Ponce’s warmly Romantic Estrellita and Villanueva’s Vals poetico. Additional variety is provided by the delightfully accessible dodecaphony of Halffter’s Tripartita and two sensitive arrangements (by Halffter and Chávez) of music by Soler and Buxtehude. The performances, by Bátiz and the Mexico City Philharmonic, are predictably idiomatic, and the sound is admirably clear. Nicholas Rast
