Strauss: Don Juan; Death and Transfiguration; Till Eulenspiegel; Alpine Symphony

The VPO sound is unmistakable, but the performances here under Previn’s direction are uncharacteristic, with more animation than usual. Don Juan has impetuosity, Till Eulenspiegel a winning skittishness; but there is also a control evident throughout, particularly in Death and Transfiguration. The Alpine Symphony, with the Philadelphia Orchestra, has a shade more spontaneity and freshness. Nicholas Rast
