Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake

You don’t have to be a balletomane to appreciate these highlights from Tchaikovsky’s three famous ballets. The admirable Kondrashin sets some interesting tempi, particularly in the Nutcracker, and though one misses that special Russian colour, he gets good solos (the harpist, principal cello and leader all had a good day) and sumptuous full-blooded sounds from the French National Orchestra. The recording is bright, the tunes keep coming track after track. Recommended. Christopher Fifield
