Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 (Pathétique), Swan Lake Suite

Bátiz conducts Tchaikovsky performances of vivid colours and much excitement; indeed it would be hard to find a more compelling version of the Pathétique’s virtuoso march movement. And the powerful emotions of the symphony are strongly projected too, with the LPO on top form. There is much to enjoy here; it is in the more intimate moments, such as the lighter Allegro con grazia, that the phrasing might have gained from a more subtle touch. Terry Barfoot
