Tchaikovsky/Grieg: Piano Concerto No. 1

Rubinstein is effective in unfolding a Romantic vision of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto, which is full of wit and brilliance. But the recorded balance favours the piano and the orchestral sound is occasionally too strident. Rubinstein’s poetic account of the Grieg Concerto also has plenty of sparkle but once again the sound, which at times lacks both depth and clarity, leaves something to be desired. Nicholas Rast
