Tchaikovsky/Rimsky-Korsakov: Symphony No. 2 in C minor (Little Russian); Symphony No. 2 in F sharp minor (Antar)

In the Tchaikovsky, Maazel recaptures much of the youthful exuberance that characterised his superb Sixties Vienna Philharmonic recordings for Decca, although the playing doesn’t really attain the same level of precision and refinement. Fortunately, the imaginative coupling, arguably the most sumptuous of all Rimsky-Korsakov’s neo-oriental compositions, finds the orchestra in far better form, and Maazel encourages them to make the most of the score’s numerous passages of instrumental virtuosity.
