Telemann: Tafelmusik (excerpts): Overture in D; Concerto for Three Violins in F; Conclusion in D

Telemann published his Tafelmusik (‘banquet’ music) in three anthologies in 1733, each comprising a suite, a concerto and chamber works; Paillard’s selection contains orchestral pieces only. The total lack of documentation and the short playing time make it uncompetitive, besides which the performances are adequate rather than inspired. In the suite, for instance, there are few subtleties of phrasing or dynamics, and the trumpet’s tone soon becomes wearing. Terry Barfoot
