Telemann: Suite in A minor for Flute; Trumpet Concerto in D; Concerto in B flat for three oboes & three violins; Sonata for two flutes; Sonata for two violins

A random selection from Telemann’s vast output, though performances are of variable quality. Best of a mixed bunch are an intelligent reading of the A minor Flute Suite, from Elaine Shaffer, and Albert Calvayrac’s crisply articulated 1975 recording of Telemann’s familiar Trumpet Concerto in D, with Louis Auriacombe directing the Toulouse Chamber Orchestra. The Concerto for three oboes and three violins fares badly: outmoded playing styles and brittle transfers are distinctly unappealing.

James Galway and Michel Debost give a creditable account of the Duo Sonata in B minor, and the disc concludes with one of Telemann’s numerous Canonic Sonatas, from violinists Leonid Koganand Elisabeth Gilels. An indifferent introduction to this composer. Michael Jameson
