Vivaldi: Flute Concertos (complete)

These discs do not quite live up to their title. Most, but not all of Vivaldi’s flute concertos are recorded here, yet readers may feel that 15 such works are enough to be getting on with. Three of the pieces were intended for members of the recorder family, while a fourth features two flutes. The soloist, Severino Gazzelloni, plays affectionately and with a virtuosity that is free from the empty gestures of a mere showman. I Musici are variable in their support, sometimes sounding, as in the first movement of RV 441, unimaginative and world-weary. Nicholas Anderson
