Vivaldi, Handel, Bach, Telemann, Purcell & G Gabrieli

Hyperion and the Consort celebrate a decade together – fifty CDs – with an anthology of delights, from the mightiest of Handel to transparent Bach. But I recommend rationed listening. Unrelieved highlights dull the sight: the span and structure of whole works are discarded at a price. The sequence – styles, textures, keys – is mostly well-ordered, though Handel dances and secular Purcell incongruously frame Bach Passion music. Consistency of performance and of engineering is a fine tribute to the Consort and to Hyperion. George Pratt
