Walton: Symphony No. 1; Crown Imperial; Orb and Sceptre

This really is a winner. Previn is a born Waltonian. His earlier recording of the First Symphony, made for RCA in 1966 (and still available), is a benchmark, and this later one is just as stunning in its own way. It catches the tensions of the opening Allegro and the malice of the Scherzo – and the rhetorical finale ends in a blaze of glory. The two Coronation marches make a duly ceremonial coupling.
