EMI’s British composers series offers a new compilation of Peter Warlock: here is the definitive 1973 Curlew, with Ian Partridge and the Music Group of London; here, too, is Janet Baker’s wonderfully fragile ‘Balulalow’ of 1980. The Choir of Guildford Cathedral in ‘Bethlehem Down’ make one believe that the holy lamb of God was, indeed, on England’s pleasant pastures seen; while an unattributed performance of Warlock’s strange and sympathetic setting of Webster’s ‘The Shrouding of the Duchess of Malfi’ and Owen Brannigan’s ‘Yarmouth Fair’ are two more wonders in this revelatory centenary compilation.
