Sallinen: Songs of Life and Death; The Iron Age Suite

The most prominent of the post-Sibelian generation of Finnish composers, Sallinen has made his name with a series of acclaimed operas. The Kalevala legends explored in his opera Kullervo provided the inspiration for his film score The Iron Age. The suite is vintage Sallinen, characterised by vivid orchestral effects and a persistent Romantic thread. Songs of Life and Death, dedicated ‘to all my Dead’, is Sallinen’s Requiem. Strongly idiomatic performances under Okko Kamu. Deborah Calland
