Schoenberg: Complete choral works: Drei Satiren; Stücke, Opp. 27 & 35; Drei Volkslieder, Op. 49; Friede auf Erden; Dreimal tausend Jahre; Psalm 130

These are conscientious performances of the complete choral works of Schoenberg, from his early, tonal Friede auf Erden of 1907 to his late affirmation of Judaism and of atonality in his setting of Psalm 130 in 1950. On the way come the punishingly self-mocking Three Satires of 1925, the robust and kaleidoscopic Six Pieces for Male-Voice Choir of 1929-30, and the artfully archaic Three Folksongs of 1948.

The voices are not always as fearless or as finely focused as they could be; and the lack of song texts and the sketchy and appallingly translated notes are a disservice to composer and performers alike.
