The vast majority of the songs on this interesting disc date from Schreker’s early years in Vienna and present a skilful if rarely individual assimilation of late-Romantic models including Brahms, Wagner and Wolf. Although there are few anticipations of the composer’s more decadent manner, fine singing from Andreas Schmidt ensures that one’s interest is sustained throughout the programme.
