Verdi/Donizetti/Puccini

This is an absorbing and delightful repertoire and an equally engaging performance from Focile. She has a marvellous way of closing a phrase by spinning the note to the edge of its sound and simply letting it float into space. Just occasionally, there is a tendency to a tightness and shrillness at the top of her register. The Donizetti Neapolitan songs are real nuggets of gold in a fascinating programme. Pollock provides excellent accompaniments. Elise McDougall
