Over the border in Mali, Habib Koite’s first studio release for six years pits his softer, more introverted voice against a mainly acoustic mix of traditional and contemporary instruments to deliver a hypnotic tapestry of melody. In one track a duet of hunting horns is surprisingly transformed into a riff. There’s Caribbean input again, but the music stays rooted through to its guitar-solo finale.
