Forty years on, it’s hard to recapture the style’s sense of pioneering Africanisation because the whole region’s Latin-African balance has tipped further, as the previous CD exemplifies.

But the softly-softly style and the soaring Brazilian melodies are utterly characteristic, the period charms modestly updated, as much in the expanded horizons of the musicians themselves as in the production, adding up to a haunting and personal affirmation.
