Anam: First Footing

For Anam the recipe is traditional Irish with upbeat rhythms, syncopations, the odd blue note, and a Greek bouzouki, no less. It offsets the accordion rather well, like lemon juice in a rich dressing, especially when it supports their own songs.

These are projected breathily by Aimée Leonard and more passionately by Brian ÓhEadhra. ‘Mistakes, I’ve made a few,’ goes one of them in apparent innocence of Sinatra’s ‘My Way’, but the song soon reaches a more poetic dimension.

You have to warm to a group that plays a reel called ‘The Last Pint’, even if it does turn out to be written by a Frenchman.
