Hukwe Zawose and Charles Zawose are the cultivated musicians from Tanzania who made a big impression last year with songs of the Wagogo people. Here, in assembly, they are in a different part of the WOMAD empire, collaborating with a team centred on the Canadian guitarist Michael Brook, and the results are louder but less powerful.

Hukwe Zawose and Charles Zawose are the cultivated musicians from Tanzania who made a big impression last year with songs of the Wagogo people. Here, in assembly, they are in a different part of the WOMAD empire, collaborating with a team centred on the Canadian guitarist Michael Brook, and the results are louder but less powerful.

The heavy grooves retain a strong African feel, and so do the contributions of Zap Mama singer Marie Daulne, but after they have taken on a one-man brass section, rhythm loops by Peter Gabriel and yet more levels of post-production, they turn into a hotch-potch falling between younger programmed music and old-fashioned Afro-pop.
