Argentinean accordionist Raúl Barboza has long used whistles, bird calls and bells to create atmosphere, but with more subtlety and success than the above. His specialty is chamamé, the evocative folk music of North-eastern Argentina, which combines European, African and Native American elements.
Though he’s lived in Paris since the late 1980s, En vivo en la Argentina is a live album recorded in 2001 in Buenos Aires. Backed by harp, guitar, bass and percussion, he sprinkles polkas and milongas among the chamamés for variety.
Poor editing and schmaltzy guest vocalist León Gieco shouldn’t mar your enjoyment.
