Forró: Dance Music from North-East Brazil

While this looks a Euro-American list, the common factor is Africa. An older generation’s dance music parties untiringly through CAMARÃO’s buoyant session. Accordion takes the lead, fast and propulsive over triangle and syncopated bass drum, plus occasional guitar and cowbells and some simple, spirited vocals.

Somewhere in the history of forró, decorous European salons met African percussion, but it has long since developed its own traditions. They include a rural version, for which button-accordion player Arlindo takes over in four numbers, relaxed, expressive and unconcerned about macho virtuosity.
