Klimax and Friends

Back across the Atlantic, Giraldo Piloto’s band KLIMAX straddles the jazz borderline with its solos and brassy tuttis, and gets into this column because the melodic triumphs over the formulaic, and the character of Cuba overrides everything.

That’s despite being drum-led, as Piloto mercifully restricts his own solos and drives the music along with panache, setting off inventive flights by residents and guests – real guests, not spliced-in.

Best is Germán Velazco’s haunting soprano sax, but it’s an outstanding team effort.
