Moon Rise Over the Silk Road

A different take on Asia comes from the duo GHAZAL. In its third and most successful recording, Kayhan Kalhor on the bowed Iranian kamancheh and Shujaat Husain Khan on sitar explore the meeting points of their historically related styles. They are confident enough on each other’s ground to exchange elements: the Indian musician launches passionate rubato flurries and the Iranian joins in high-speed rhythmic games. Most competent musicians can get to first base in this kind of interaction, but only the bold keep on developing.
