Que Levantó el Dedo

There’s more than a touch of samba in ‘Jalamandrú’, a highlight of Que Levantó el Dedo. Even so, the predominant flavour of peret’s short but sweet album is Catalan rumba – think Gipsy Kings – that infectious mix of Roma (Gypsy) flamenco and Latin American styles, such as the delightful Cuban guajira of ‘La Fama No Me Cambiará’ (‘Fame won’t change me’). With crisply propulsive acoustic guitars, memorable choruses and a charming, characterful voice, it’s an unexpected treat.
