The first thing you register, after the deep electric bass, is that BOBI CESPEDES’s music is more African; the next, that she lets in more state-of-the-art production. But what a voice!

Across a slightly lower tessitura than Ferrer’s, it ranges with a strength and ease that are quite unique: the nearest parallel, anywhere, must be Cesaria Evora. Cespedes’s music revisits Cuban rhythms with tonal depth, cultural resonance, and an inimitably San Francisco speculative edge, from heavy, booming beats to a surprise conclusion accompanied only by acoustic drums and an answering chorus.
