SALLY NYOLO’s ventures sound fresher – a change from predominantly male perspectives. Having made her name with Zap Mama, she has taken her fame and skill back to Cameroon and brought on home-based musicians for her latest issue. On to village and local urban foundations, she duly builds her exotic discoveries, from Parisian to Latin to Caribbean. Nyolo is an inventive musician with a sparky, low-ranging style and the power to galvanise others, using highly varied African rhythms and percussion (try ‘Un jour au village’ with its utensils, real or imagined, and quick-fire vocals).
